But then Grace Bingle took the podium to talk about staying motivated. She prompted the group to list their reasons for attempting to lose weight.

"Being in a position to tie your shoes," someone called out.

"Being able to see the feet," someone added, to laughter.

"Being happy again," someone said.

They laughed frequently. They talked about the things they stood to achieve from weight reduction and their daily hurdles: TV ads that trigger cravings,
stress, queasy. Grandchildren where do you turn using the cookies you have on their behalf after they've left your home?

Groves told the group she puts them in her own deep freezer.

"Have you ever were built with a frozen cookie?" Collins said. "They're wooonderful."

Denise Castles, 53, a brand new member, said she liked the upbeat, supportive atmosphere.

"It takes the focus off eating," she said.
